Media powerhouse, E.W. Scripps, owns over 25 newspapers in 13 markets, 19 television stations nationally, and United Media, a global syndication of 150 comic strips and newspaper editorial features distributed worldwide. They are also the namesake of the popular "Scripps National Spelling Bee" which has been ongoing since 1946.  Less widely known is their "New Business Development" division, which is always on the hunt for innovative ways to leverage their vast network of sales and distribution outlets and come up with the next great thing. 

The Challenge

With their strong ties to local media and particularly high school sports, the folks at Scripps wanted to test a new mobile phone application that would enable high school football fans to communicate building up to and during the Friday night showdown at their local high school. Scripps had the basic concept along with a technical networking and development staff to implement and manage the concept but they needed a digital creative team who could head up the branding, information architecture and user interface design to take the concept from theory to practice.

The Solution

For this engagement, BigWheel's design team developed the name, branding and user interface structure for this mobile tool. Our designers collaborated with the Scripps in-house technical development staff to provide the visual elements so they could build the application.  We also worked with the business development team to help craft a distribution model that would quickly fit within their current sales network. In addition, we consulted with their marketing experts to ensure that our design was flexible enough to address all of the nuances of a wide variety of markets and end-users. At BigWheel we love doing the development for our designs, but this was a great example of how our design team can work independent of our programming team with partners that already have development resources.
